Halal meaning

Halal signifies what is permissible for Muslims who adhere to Islam as their religion. It encompasses not only the final product but also every step undertaken before delivery.

Halal is a dietary practice governed by clear rules and guidelines that Muslims are obligated to observe. It extends beyond meat products; according to Islamic principles, anything deemed halal is beneficial for individuals, animals, the environment, and society. Conversely, the same applies to what is considered haram (forbidden).

These religious precepts regarding food are based on:

  • The Quran (the holy book of Muslims).
  • The Sunnah (the tradition and way of life of the Prophet Muhammad).
  • The consensus of the Muslim community.
  • Analogy, based on the primary sources of Islam as explained by recognized Islamic scholars.

Food is an essential part of daily life, so these dietary laws also play an important role in a Muslim’s life. Halal also represents a conscious way of living and therefore stands for quality, hygiene and lifestyle.

Frequently asked questions about halal

What is an E number?

An e-number is a number that is assigned to a certain additive or excipient in foods. It indicates that the substance is allowed in the EU. E numbers are included in the Commodities Act. The producer is obliged to state these additives on the label. Producers can put the number and/or name of the substance on the packaging. Many additions also have different names. This makes it very difficult for a consumer to understand what is inside.

Is stunning allowed?

The basis of Islamic slaughter is that the animal is slaughtered without any form of stunning. Islamic scholars indicate, however, that an anesthetic is allowed to a certain extent and in special cases, namely when there is impotence or when the quality or animal welfare is at stake. In all cases, the anesthesia should be reversible. There must be a guarantee that the animal will continue to live after the stunning and will not die.

What are the important features of halal slaughter?
  • The animal must be inherently permissible and healthy.
  • It must comply with universal, moral and health requirements.
  • The animal must be treated humanely.
  • It must also be alive during slaughter, and the name of Allah (God, the Creator of the universe) must be mentioned over the animal.
  • The animal is slaughtered through an incision in the neck by a skilled Muslim slaughterer.
  • Sufficient time must then be allowed for bleeding before processing continues.
